2007 chevrolet equinox review this car review is specific to this model, not the actual vehicle for sale. Improved interior, more safety features. introductiona solstice, not an equinox, is an event to celebrate. An equinox is by comparison a non-event, when light and dark are equal, when everything is just alright.  the chevrolet equinox may not represent the return of the sun, either, but it should be considerably brighter for '07, thanks to a bounty of improvements that really are worth celebrating. Instruments and controls are largely new, and the chassis settings revised for better ride and handling. New options include upgraded audio systems, a remote starter, and at last a navigation system integrated into the stereo.  these are welcome changes because we have not been enthralled with the equinox cabin.  equinox is chevrolet's answer to the ford escape, honda cr-v and toyota rav4. But equinox is bigger and roomier than any of these competitors, and has features that enhance its versatility. The rear seatbacks also recline for additional comfort. It's nearly 14 inches longer than ford escape and just three inches shorter than a chevy trailblazer. Its long wheelbase gives the equinox good stability and ride quality. However, equinox seats only five, because it does not offer a hopelessly cramped third row, as does the toyota rav4. Like escape, cr-v and rav4, the equinox is based on a passenger-car design but has an interior like a traditional suv. Therefore, industry observers and other car crazies call the equinox a crossover utility because it crosses over the line from truck to car. lineupthe 2007 chevy equinox comes in two trim levels: the basic ls and the better-appointed lt. Both are available with front-wheel drive (fwd) or all-wheel drive (awd). All models come with a 3. 4-liter v6 and five-speed automatic transmission.  equinox ls fwd 22,180) and awd 23,680) come with air conditioning; cruise control; tilt steering; cloth upholstery; a fold-flat front passenger seat; a multi-flex 60/40 split rear bench seat that folds, slides, and reclines; six-speaker am/fm/cd audio; and power windows, mirrors, and locks with remote keyless entry. Optional side-impact and head-curtain airbags 395) come with a rollover sensor, so they can provide head and torso protection in a rollover as well as a side impact. walkaroundthe 2007 chevy equinox is aerodynamically smoother, thanks to a subtle re-shaping of front and rear fascias as well as the rear spoiler. From the front, equinox still looks the part of a chevy truck, with its requisite single-bar grille sporting a large gold chevrolet bow-tie emblem. But the black mask overlapping the front bumper has shrunken and retreated, which we find a subtle but worthwhile aesthetic improvement.  it's harder to see the difference in the rear spoiler. And in side view, equinox looks pretty much the same as before. That's good, because we've liked equinox from that angle since it debuted for '05.  in that broadside view, equinox looks quite a bit different from the rest of the chevy truck family. The roof pillars and the sheetmetal above the windows but below the roof seem to be extra-thick, imparting a feeling of extra solidity and strength, important for a truck made on a car platform. Equinox is based on a car-type platform, with unit-body construction rather than body on frame for better ride and handling. interiorinside, where the people live, work and ride, is where the chevy equinox shines when compared to some of its competitors. Up front, equinox carries flexible net storage pockets on both sides of the center tunnel. The center console/armrest has a small storage cubby and a coin holder for toll money. Dual cupholders pop out of the end of it, but they're flimsy and get in the way of the handbrake. The armrest flips up, providing better access to an open floor console that's a perfect place for a purse, briefcase or tote bag. The floor-mounted cupholder works well, while slots farther to the rear holds cds angled forward for easy selection.  the equinox cabin is a clean and functional design. That said, some of the materials and control interfaces we found inside last year's equinox seemed to us less than bright. Window switches are now lighted. Also new for '07 is a standard driver information center that includes more than 20 personalization and vehicle information features, such as trip odometer, fuel range, outside temperature display and door locking programs.  the rear seat rides on a track that allows it to slide back and forth up to eight inches, to bring kids or briefcases closer to the front, or to provide extra legroom for tall second-row passengers. With the rear seat full forward, there's 35. 7 cubic feet of cargo space behind it. Gm calls this innovative feature the multi-flex rear seat.  because the rear seatback is split 60/40, equinox can transport two rear passengers along with long cargo items. The front passenger seat folds flat, further extending cargo room length. When folded, the hard front seatback can be used as a table or desktop. Rear passengers also enjoy a 12-volt power outlet and, new for '07, a fold-down center armrest with two additional cupholders. Rear head restraints were downscaled last year, improving rearward visibility for the driver. driving impressionchevrolet's 3. 4-liter unit is an old pushrod-overhead-valve design that lacks modern features such as variable valve timing and variable-length intake runners (although it does feature hydraulic roller lifters, just like a corvette). It feels strained when pushed at high rpm. Still, equinox delivers good acceleration under most circumstances, and it's smooth enough. Epa fuel economy estimates are improved somewhat for '07, at 19/26 mpg city/highway for front-drive models and 18/25 for the awd version.    the v6 engine is aided considerably by the five-speed automatic transmission. Chevrolet says the equinox can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in about 8. 5 seconds, which should be adequate performance for most families. And while it may not excel at acceleration, equinox is rated to pull a 3500-pound trailer, the same as the more powerful escape and rav4 v6s.  its long wheelbase and 3800-pound heft give the equinox a decent ride, making it a suitable companion for long trips. Its handling is responsive and it's easy to modulate the brakes for smooth stops.  the equinox has good road feel in highway driving, yet steering effort is low at low speeds for easier maneuvering in tight parking lots. The steering ratio is variable, and the equinox uses electric, rather than hydraulic, power steering. We don't think the average driver will feel the difference between this system and more conventional hydraulics, and that's a good thing. Unlike a hydraulic servo, the electric booster doesn't use engine power, resulting in slightly better fuel economy.  stabilitrak electronic stability control helps drivers maintain c.

Straddling the line between mid-size sedan and a near-luxury sport sedan, it's a car designed for auto aficionados who appreciate something different. Something other than a camry or accord, for example. Either way, cruising on the highway is effortless with nissan's 265-horsepower v6.  both models are stuffed with luxury features. The refined cabin is innovative and comfortable with supportive, luxurious seats. The interesting skyview roof, a standard glass panel running lengthwise over the front and rear seats, is the sort of feature associated with futuristic concept cars. Also interesting are the available rear bucket seats, another feature seen primarily on futuristic concept cars. Together, the bucket seats and skyview roof make back-seat riders feel more like first-class passengers and less like coach-class cattle. The 2006 edition comes in two distinct flavors: the sporty 3. 5 se and the more luxuriously equipped 3. 5 sl.  se 27,750) comes with a sports suspension, traction control, and 18-inch wheels and tires. It comes standard with cloth upholstery and metallic interior accents. Leather upholstery, woodgrain trim, heated seats, xenon hid headlamps, a premium eight-speaker bose stereo, and conveniences that are optional on the se are all standard on the sl.  the skyview roof comes standard on both se and sl. This option also includes everything from the driver preferred package, plus a power rear sunshade with front and rear controls, auto up/down rear windows, and an extra rear 12-volt power outlet.  options for both se and sl include a dvd navigation system with seven-inch color lcd display 1,800); xm or sirius satellite radio 350); vehicle dynamic control 600). New for 2006 is a bluetooth hands-free phone system 300). walkaroundthe nissan maxima features a chiseled, muscular body with pronounced character lines. It's aerodynamic and modern and yet architecturally art deco, like some flash gordon fantasy of yesterday's tomorrow.  this is especially true at the front end, where a rounded-rectangle texture fills in the twin nostrils in nissan's signature grille, split by a dark chrome medallion at the center, with aerodynamically integrated headlight clusters wrapping over the top and around at the sides.  big, round fender openings accented by flattened wheel lips pay homage to enormous alloy wheels: 18-inch, six-spoke units on the se; 17-inch, seven-spoke on the sl. The relatively open wheel design shows off the black-painted brake calipers nicely.  the maxima's rear roof slopes into the trunk lid flanked by buttress-like sail panels. It tilts and telescopes, and for 2006 the redundant controls on the wheel are illuminated. In front of the driver are three small gauges set in their own pod, like those on a motorcycle.  we like many of the details of the maxima's interior, specifically the light colors and the proximity of the switches and controls to the driver. However, the labels for the climate and audio systems are too small to be easily read, and the audio and trip computer seem to have more buttons than they should need. The display is hard to read in bright sunlight with polarized sunglasses.  we didn't care, either, for the large, flat splash of trim on the center stack, neither the titanium-colored plastic in the se nor the faux wood on the sl. It seems like wasted space. The skyview window does not open, but nissan says it found a lot of people rarely open their sunroofs. Satellite radio can be great companion on long trips, delivering cd-quality sound nearly everywhere. Not having to change stations on a cross-country trip has distinct advantages. Finding stations is easy with rds (radio data system), which clearly identifies programming on the radio's display.  three cargo nets are provided in the trunk and work better than most for holding down a load of groceries. driving impressionthe nissan maxima se rides smoothly and quietly, even on bad pavement. We preferred the se over the slightly softer ride of the sl because it felt more connected to the road. Both models handled bumps well, a benefit of the independent multi-link rear suspension.  cruising on the highway is effortless in the maxima. The 3. 5-liter v6 develops 265 horsepower and pulls strongly in passing situations. The v6 has such a broad power band that the maxima is happy being either a high-revving hard-charger or a boulevard loafer. It's a great engine, and is considered one of the best v6s available from anyone.  both the six-speed manual and the five-speed automatic transmissions are well-matched to the smoothly revving engine. We prefer the automatic. The shifter on the six-speed manual feels tall. For these reasons and others, most people choose the automatic. And we think they're right.  we drove the maxima down some winding canyon roads and found it handles very well with high grip limits. The maxima does feel noticeably bigger and more ponderous than the lighter altima, however. The maxima and altima share basic structures, but the maxima weighs more. The steering is accurate, though it seems light and slow. Body roll is minimal, meaning it doesn't lean much in corners. Charge into a corner past the grip of the tires and the car understeers initially. Coming out of the corners, the maxima doesn't spin the wheels, which is a good thing, but there is some torque steer, a slight tugging sensation at the steering wheel.  overall, the maxima feels like a sporty sedan that's enjoyable to drive. summarythe nissan maxima is individualistic and indulgently luxurious, with innovative styling and interior features. It's more pleasant to live with than early models, which were initially spartan, unrefined and noisy. It starts at $12,460. It comes standard with a 5-speed manual transmission. A 3-speed automatic transmission is optional 600).  dodge will soon introduce a high-performance neon r/t as a 2001 model. walkaroundchrysler first introduced the neon in january 1994. Back then, it was the roomiest car in its class. It was quick and fun to drive. And it was inexpensive. After listening to consumers, chrysler believed the original neon was the perfect answer. Those consumers had told chrysler that they were tired of paying high prices: americans now wanted a good five-cent cigar. So chrysler designed the neon to be a low-priced car. But the company quickly discovered that people really wanted more than that. They may have said they wanted a cheap car, but they also wanted refinement, quality and comfort. It was a hard lesson. Though more than 1. 5 million neons have been sold during the past five years, other manufacturers introduced larger, more refined and more feature-laden cars. Chrysler continually refined and improved the neon throughout its life cycle and the later models are much nicer than the earlier models. But it came time to redesign the car. And that brings us to the 2000 neon.  the 2000 neon looks similar to the old one, but all the bodywork is new. Those ovoid headlamps continue to be a key styling cue, but they've been redesigned with jewel-like reflectors that add sophistication. The design of the front fascia is more integrated. A new tail lamp design along with more pronounced wheel arches offer a crisp, less rounded look. Most noticeable is the change in profile. The base of the front windshield has been moved forward 3 inches. This major design change gives the car a more raked, cab-forward appearance that's in keeping with the dodge intrepid and other chrysler sedans. The more aerodynamic windshield shape improves the car's ability to deflect water away and it helps reduce wind noise.  overall, the new neon is longer and wider than before. It rides on a longer wheelbase with a slightly wider track (the distance between the front wheels). These changes make for a roomier interior, but they also smooth out the ride quality and increase stability at high speeds. The ground clearance has been raised slightly to accommodate longer suspension travel, which further improves ride quality. Yet the floor pan has been lowered, which significantly increases trunk space. The new neon provides more cargo space than the ford escort or saturn sl sedans.  the new body structure is much more rigid, which ultimately results in a smoother, quieter, more controlled ride. Full frame doors reduce wind noise and create a tighter seat of door to body. The latest sound-deadening technology helps isolate the cabin from engine and road noise. interiorthough chrysler had continually improved the interior of the last generation neon, the interior of the new neon was completely redesigned and is much nicer than before. For starters, there's more of it. The driver sits a little higher than before for improved visibility.  back-seat passengers benefit the most from the larger interior with more head, shoulder and hip room. The trunk is significantly deeper than before. The rear seats split and fold down for carrying additional cargo.  sporty new gauges grace a redesigned instrument panel with a wide dashboard brow. Premium door trim and materials that are soft to the touch provide a richer appearance and feel. Everything is easy to use and works well except the stereo: it sounds mediocre at best and the buttons small and hard to operate while driving. driving impressionthe new neon rides smoother and quieter than before. There's less wind noise, less engine noise, less road noise and less vibration. The neon seems quieter and more refined than chevy's cavalier does. The new neon seems to ride better than a honda civic - high praise.  chrysler redesigned the neon's fully independent macpherson-strut front and rear suspensions. The ground clearance was raised slightly to provide significantly more suspension travel. (jounce travel was improved by 15 percent in the front and by 30 percent in the rear.) this greatly improves overall ride quality while decreasing the chance of bottoming under heavy loads. Softer springs and premium shocks give the neon a smoother ride than before.  neon's redesigned single overhead-cam 2. 0-liter engine feels more powerful than its predecessor. A new air induction system broadens the torque curve, which makes the car feel more powerful around town. A new exhaust manifold, cylinder head cover and timing belt cover, and attention to a myriad of details reduce noise.  the brake pedal feels firmer. The brake system was redesigned for improved pedal feel. The thickness of the front brake rotors was increased and low-metallic linings were used to keep them from squealing. Whether slippery or dry, the antilock brake system helps drivers to maintain steering control in panic braking situations. Disc brakes are in theory less likely to fade out on mountain roads than the standard rear drum brakes. The abs option also includes traction control, which helps the driver maintain control when accelerating on slippery surfaces.  we drove the neon back to back with the honda civic, chevy cavalier and other cars in its class at chrysler's proving grounds at chelsea, michigan. There, the neon seemed better than its competition, both in terms of handling and ride quality. It rides nicely, handles well and is fun to drive. It's more stable than the old neon and its manners are much more refined. A week on maryland's roads showed the neon to be quite stable at high speeds. It has been improved in every way. It's roomier, smoother, quieter, and more comfortable. Air conditioning, antilock brakes, remote keyless entry, power windows and other conveniences we're beginning to take for granted are all extra-cost options.  in short, the dodge neon is a top contender among compact cars. There are three v8 engines and one v6 to choose from with either a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.  wheel flares are now available for 1500 series 4x4 models, a tonneau cover is available for all models, and the two smallest v8 engines have more power for 2000. walkaroundadditional new stuff for 2000 includes self-dimming rearview mirrors that include an outside temperature gauge and a compass. Ls and lt models include new programmable door locks that allow the driver to customize locking and unlocking features for their own family's tastes.  the 2000 chevrolet silverado is built on a frame that is the stiffest and lightest truck frame general motors has ever built. The front frame rails are hydroformed, a process that uses high-pressure hydraulics to shape steel. Tubular crossmembers and roll-formed mid-rails increase rigidity further. This stiff structure enhances handling and ride quality immensely, while improving crashworthiness.  three v8 engines are available, in 4. 8-, 5. 3- and 6. 0-liter displacements. All three are based on the new gm small-block architecture that was introduced on the corvette two years ago and shared with the camaro and firebird last year. The doors and door openings are now the largest in the industry, while the cab is the roomiest.  the instrument package looks like a cross between what is found in the new corvette and what was used in the previous c/k trucks. All use pleasant graphics in white on black.  the sound system control panel is located above the climate controls. The front seats were equipped with optional heaters. Air conditioning outlets and a set of drop-down cup holders are built in for rear-seat passengers. A compass is incorporated into the lt model's overhead console, along with three storage areas for sunglasses, garage door opener, and small items. When cargo capacity is more important than hauling passengers, the entire rear seat assembly can be removed through the side door with a wrench.  about the only thing we didn't like was the design of the interior door handles, which operate in an up-and-in arc and felt loose whenever we used them. We'd prefer more resistance and a more positive feel. driving impressionwe loved every mile we put on the silverado lt. It drives like a luxury car and is supremely smooth and quiet. New mounting and isolation hardware reduces noise and vibration. A cast magnesium beam behind the instrument panel and a lateral steel beam between the magnesium beam and the right side of the dash further reinforce the stiff body. Squeaks and rattles have been eliminated. This is one strong truck, and its strength lets the suspension soak up and manage all the bumps and ruts and tar strips so well that its overall ride behavior is near-luxury. The steering has a fairly wide dead spot in the center when cruising, which chevrolet says is designed to minimize steering corrections on the highway. That's enough torque to smoke the rear tires at will. The new engine is a much better small-block than before, and we recommend the 5. 3-liter over the smaller 4. 8-liter version, which also got a 15 horsepower increase for 2000, to 270 horsepower.  brakes have been improved substantially over the previous model and it's a welcome improvement. Braking force comes into play only an inch into the pedal travel, a welcome improvement over the mushy pedal on the previous pickup. A new feature called dynamic rear proportioning improves stability under heavy braking whether the truck is loaded or empty. And it is the newest design. Back in the 1990s, sales of the ford taurus eclipsed those of the toyota camry and honda accord.  then the market shifted to trucks and suvs and it seemed like ford abandoned the car market. Sales of the ford explorer skyrocketed. The taurus slumped and was relegated to the rental car fleets. People who wanted a mid-size sedan bought japanese cars.  ford is now determined to regain its footing in the car market. The ford fusion just may be the right answer and just in the nick of time. In any case, ford appears to have done its homework.  based on the highly praised mazda6 sedan, the fusion is a rock solid entry at a decent price. It handles well, looks purposeful and delivers good value for the money. lineupthe 2006 ford fusion was launched with front-wheel drive, but an all-wheel-drive version will be available later in calendar year 2006. Some people like the aggressive, angular look, some don't.  it starts with the large headlights that rise up into the top edge of the front fender, which features a crisp fold along the top edge that runs all the way back along the edge of the roof to the trunk. Three thick chrome bars across the grille also make the car look more upmarket than its pricing might suggest. The front bumper almost disappears as there are two chrome strips below it that match the ones on the grille.  the fusion has a wide track, which makes it stand out on the freeway when viewed from behind. A high trunk line and large triangular taillight clusters with chrome trim give the rear end a classy look, not unlike some newer cadillacs.  overall, the fusion is slightly smaller than the taurus it replaces, but it has much the same dimensions as its competitors. Although the fusion shares the same basic floorpan as the mazda 6 its wheelbase is two inches longer and it is an inch or so wider. Ford also says it is a stiffer bodyshell than the mazda6, which is good. interiorin keeping with its european influence, ford has chosen to go with the soft touch for surface materials, which is expected in a luxury car but not in a mass-market car.  the dashboard is a straightforward design that runs horizontally across the car's width with just a binnacle above the instrument pod. Decent sized control buttons for the radio and climate controls should please everyone.  the center stack is simple, but nothing to write home about. The car we drove had a dark charcoal interior so everything was finished in black. The optional two-tone interior, especially the dark stone and camel with faux wood trim looks more inviting.  a convenient storage bin on top of the dashboard features a large clamshell lid and it's big enough to hold a phone or small camera as well as maps and the like. The center console, door pockets, and front seatback pockets provide additional storage.  rear-seat passengers will find a decent amount of leg room with nicely shaped front seatbacks that allow for plenty of foot space. Head and leg room measurements don't put the fusion at the top of its class, but the back seat feels roomier than the numbers suggest.  the fusion has a good-size trunk with a flat floor and low lift over. The scissor-type hinges avoid the annoyance of luggage being crushed by gooseneck hinges. All fusion models include a 60/40 split rear seatback, which allows for a generous amount of pass-through space. driving impressionthe mazda6 and ford focus have established themselves as class-leading cars when it comes to handling. Ford openly admits that it's taken these traits from the two cars to make sure the fusion inherits the same attributes. The rack-and-pinion steering was precise with just the right amount of weight to make the driver feel connected to the road without being twitchy.  in the past, a car that handled well often came with a stiff ride. That's certainly not the case with the fusion. The front suspension is a short/long arm design while the rear wheels are anchored through a multi-link setup. Improved bushings and hydraulic engine mounts keep vibration and road noise to a minimum.  the 221-horsepower v6 engine provides enough power, although the fusion will not likely be mistaken for a sports sedan. According to ford's own tests the fusion can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 8 seconds, a reasonable performance though not as quick as the v6 versions of the honda accord and toyota camry.  the six-speed automatic transmission is very smooth. Shift into drive and it works well. However, drivers who want more control won't find it here. Shifting from d to l only locks out fifth and sixth gears. Also, there's no indicator showing the driver what gear it's in at any given moment and around town it's difficult to tell by feel.  the fusion v6 manages 29 mpg on the highway, according to the epa. But ford's new flagship is larger and more substantial and comes with much more standard equipment.  the five hundred boasts a body structure and safety technology developed by volvo and first used on volvo's s80 luxury sedan and then for its highly acclaimed xc90 sport utility vehicle. Ford acquired the swedish automaker famous for its passenger-protecting innovations in 1999. When it came time to develop the five hundred (and its upscale cousin, the mercury montego), ford imported volvo's best structural and safety engineers to work on the project. The five hundred is available with a choice of front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, the latter giving it more stable handling and better traction, particularly in inclement weather.  ford developed the five hundred as a successor to the taurus and to compete with cars such as the brand new chrysler 300, the venerable toyota avalon, and the aging chevrolet impala. The driver sits relatively high, and the roomy front seats offer a commanding view of the road. Back-seat passengers will not complain about being cramped, either. The back seats fold down to increase cargo capacity. The six-speed automatic transmission that comes standard helps the engine deliver responsive performance and good fuel economy. It also rides on a wheelbase that is 4. 5 inches longer, which not only gives the car its solid, luxury-car stance but enhances smooth ride quality.  the chief designer says it was a challenge to sculpt a ford-styled body around a volvo chassis, and adds that designers used what he calls 'plainer surfaces with taut lines' to give the car a modern look without losing its passenger car proportions. The five hundred's rounded forms offer a definite alternative to the more upright, angular chrysler 300.  the five hundred's face has large, jewel-styled and multi-bulb triangular headlight elements on either side of a wide, trapezoidal grille. Chrome accents the front edges of the bumper. There are similar chrome accents on the rear bumper and another that bisects the doors and provides a visual bridge between slightly flared wheel arches. Chrome also frames the side windows, which include large third windows that give the five hundred more of a luxury car profile.  the tall trunk lid has a spoiler-like lip along its top trailing edge. Those who need even more space for people and cargo can opt for the freestyle, a crossover wagon based on the five hundred. Those who want a smaller and less expensive vehicle will next year be able to get the fusion, another mid-size sedan that's smaller than the taurus. interioralthough the 2005 ford five hundred's exterior is a foot shorter than the full-size ford crown victoria sedan, the new car has nearly as much passenger room (107. 1 cubic feet for the five hundred vs. 108. 2 for the crown vic). The dashboard has either silver or wood-grain trim with metal used for the door releases and around the base and top of the gear shift lever. We found the switchgear well designed and easy to use.  one cautionary note (well, actually two of them): a steeply raked windshield can reflect a lot of glare off the top of the dashboard (at least it did in the car we drove with a tan-colored 'pebble' interior; 'shale' and 'black' interiors also are available), and a driver wearing sunglasses can have trouble reading the darkly colored gauges in the se and sel models. Not too big, not too small, and very rugged. introductiondodge durango is handsome, powerful, versatile, and refined. Based on the dakota pickup, durango is smaller and more maneuverable than the full-size suvs, such as the ford expedition and chevrolet tahoe. Dodge durango has found a comfortable niche that ford and gm missed.  with theater-style seating that gives rear-seat passengers a view of the road ahead, and other interior creature comforts, the durango is a smart choice for large families. It's also a good choice for people who tow light to medium-sized trailers. For 2002, dodge has added a high-value trim level called sxt with unique graphite trim. Two engines are available: a 4. 7-liter v8 and a 5. 9-liter v8.  five trim levels are available. Seventeen-inch wheels with 275/60r17 tires and a sport-tuned suspension improve handling, while body-colored wheel flares help set the r/t apart. walkarounddodge durango doesn't look like other suvs. It makes a bolder statement with its muscular styling. It looks sportier than the ford or gm competition and many of the imports. Durango shares its front end with the dakota pickup. The grille's prominent bull's-eye slats instantly identify this suv as part of the dodge family. interioreight people can fit in the durango (six comfortably), with theater seating designed to give everyone a view out the front. The back half of the roof is raised nearly two inches to increase rear-seat headroom and visibility. This raised portion is cleverly disguised with a roof rack.  second-row seats are quite comfortable, offering plenty of headroom and adequate legroom. Stable cup holders and rear heating/air conditioning controls add to comfort. Third-row seats (standard in slt, slt plus, and r/t) are surprisingly comfortable for two people, who enjoy adequate legroom by tucking their feet under the second-row seats in front of them. Getting in and out of that third row is easy: flip a lever and the second-row seatback folds forward, then tumbles out of the way, allowing a quick entry or exit.  durango's interior was re-designed for 2001, including a new instrument panel, interior trim, center and overhead consoles, carpeting and steering wheel. A dual-zone climate control system is standard, and slt and r/t models provide auxiliary heat for the third-row seats.  when it's time to haul cargo, the tailgate lifts up and out of the way, and the two rows of seats easily fold down to provide a large, relatively flat floor. A trout bum could sleep back there. All durangos have a long, narrow storage compartment under the floor just inside the rear liftgate, with enough space for the jack, flares and other roadside equipment.  overall, the interior design is executed well. Matching plastic trim provides an organic appearance. The seats appear plain, but they are comfortable. Carpeting extends to the backs of the rear headrests, which do not have to be removed when the seats are folded down. That's a convenient, timesaving feature.  the driving position is comfortable, with good visibility over an attractive, rounded hoodline. Instruments are big and easy to read, although the speedometer appears busy with has marks for every 2-1/2 mph. Power outside mirrors are easy to adjust with a big knob on the driver's door. Cup-holders and storage trays are nicely designed, while a digital compass and other useful readouts beckon from overhead. Large buttons on the leather-wrapped steering wheel operate one of the better cruise controls we've encountered. driving impressionthe durango is enjoyable to drive. Equipped with the big 5. 9-liter magnum v8, it always feels willing to get down the road quickly, with excellent throttle response and quick acceleration. Shifting is smooth and responsive and transmission ratios are well matched to the healthy torque of the 5. 9-liter v8.  it handles well when driven briskly down narrow roads with tight corners and sweeping turns. The durango feels a bit sportier than other sport-utilities, particularly the bigger ones. Steering is precise and the suspension provides excellent transient response, responding crisply when dodging quickly from left to right and back again. On unpaved roads, the durango provides predictable handling. We never bottomed the suspension out in spite of bouncing around in the rough stuff.  durango's competent off-road capability and on-road handling response don't come as a free lunch, however. We found ride quality on downtown washington's crumbling infrastructure a bit on the harsh side. Ride quality on rough pavement is not as smooth as it is in, say, the new ford explorer or gmc envoy.  as mentioned, two v8 engines are available. It uses a modern overhead-cam configuration, as opposed to the 5. 9-liter engine's traditional overhead-valve design. Engine and transmission talk to each other and choose the optimum ratio based on driver input and load conditions. Most often, it will choose the numerically higher ratio when starting off from rest, or when towing; and a numerically lower ratio as a more ideal kick-down or passing gear.  new for 2002, is a similarly engineered five-speed automatic, with two overdrive ratios and again two different second-gear ratios. That's considerably more robust than the just-released 2003 expedition's standard 4. 6-liter overhead-cam v8 (232 horsepower and 291 pound-feet of torque), and not far behind expedition's optional 5. 4-liter unit, with its 260 horsepower and 350 pound-feet. The dodge 5. 9-liter v8 also compares favorably with the chevrolet tahoe's 5. 3-liter v8 (285 horsepower, but only 325 pound-feet of torque). Fuel economy for the 5. 9-liter dodge is 12/17 mpg city/highway, as rated by the epa. The durango can nearly tow with the big boys, too. With the 5. 9-liter engine and 3. 92 axle, it's capable of pulling a 7,550-pound trailer. Chevy's tahoe is rated to pull 7,900 pounds, and ford's expedition is rated for 8,900 pounds. Both transfer cases rely on shift-on-the-fly lever mounted on the floor. It's not suitable for dry. summarydodge durango is practical, intelligently designed and easy to operate. It also compares favorably to the full-size ford expedition, chevrolet tahoe, and gmc yukon.  the durango cuts a distinctive appearance among sport-utility vehicles. It's an aggressive look with bold headlamps and a split grille. The horizontal bar that splits the grille, headlamps and turn signals is chromed on the ls, body-colored on the lt, and black on the ss. The front bumper features a large opening with two vertical slats, and the optional foglights are mounted down low. The front end of the trailblazer makes it look like a scaled-down suburban or silverado.  overall, trailblazer looks neat and sturdy, with confident lines that express utility. The pillars and window lines are graceful, while the big fender flares are visually bold. At the rear is a convenient step in the center of the bumper.  the seven-seat trailblazer ext is 16 inches longer between the front and rear wheels than the standard five-seat trailblazer and looks disproportionately long and narrow. The easiest way to tell the trailblazer from the trailblazer ext is to look at the rear passenger doors; they're full-size doors on the ext but the rear wheel wells cut into them on the standard-length model.  for 2006, the antennas for the optional onstar assistance system and xm satellite radio are combined in a single unit. interiorthe chevy trailblazer's cabin is comfortable and convenient. Seats on the ls are manually adjustable. Eight-way power operation with memory and seat heaters is available on lt models. Power adjustable pedals on the lt allow shorter drivers to move the brake and accelerator pedals up to three inches closer for better positioning and comfort without having to move too close to the airbag-equipped steering wheel. It's a good safety feature and popular among women.  the trailblazer seats five, the trailblazer ext seats seven.  second-row space is nearly identical between trailblazer and trailblazer ext. First and second row hip and leg room is comparable to the ford explorer, though the trailblazer does offer an inch more headroom throughout the cabin.  cargo space in the ext is generous. The cargo floor isn't as flat as we'd like, though, and a gap between the two third-row seats makes it less dog-friendly.  space in the ext third-row seats, is a bit cramped, as it is with most third rows. The explorer has more third-row legroom. Also, we put some an adult and a teenager back there and they complained about tunnel vision.  up front, the driver gets complete and clean instrumentation. Heating and air conditioning can be controlled separately by the driver and front-seat passenger. Ext models add separate climate controls for rear-seat passengers as well. Interior lights abound, including reading lights. There are pockets in the front doors and behind the front seats, though none in the rear doors. Behind the rear seat is a small hidden compartment under the floor. A cargo net, a scrolling tonneau cover, and power outlets are available. An overhead console on the lt includes a sunglasses holder plus travelnote digital recorder.  for 2006, chevy trailblazers get an enhanced sound-mitigation system, including an acoustic windshield to minimize wind noise, and additional sound insulation within areas of the body that can transmit engine and road noise.  safety is improved from the available head-curtain side-impact airbags, which unfold from the roof rail between the a-pillar and side window header.
